FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What is grass fed beef tallow?
It’s not lotion. It’s not cream. It’s skin food. Made with grass-fed tallow and jojoba oil — two ingredients your skin actually recognizes — it hydrates, heals, and supports a healthy skin barrier without the fluff.
Grass-fed beef tallow is a nutrient-rich fat derived from the suet (kidney), or hard fat, of cows that have been exclusively fed a grass diet throughout their lives. This type of tallow is highly prized in skincare and cooking for its purity and health benefits, as it contains essential fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and closely resembles the natural oils (sebum) in human skin. -
Why is grass fed beef tallow used as skincare?
We believe that what’s best for your skin should come straight from nature. Tallow balm is one of the most nourishing, naturally compatible ingredients for skincare because its structure closely resembles our skin’s own oils. This allows it to absorb beautifully, helping to restore and support your skin’s moisture barrier without clogging pores.
Trusted for thousands of years, beef tallow has been a powerful, natural moisturizer across cultures. Ancient peoples used tallow to protect and care for their skin—Native Americans applied it to withstand harsh climates, while Europeans incorporated it into balms and creams for its rich, hydrating qualities.
Our grass-fed, grass-finished tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with essential fatty acids, providing deep moisture and soothing benefits for all skin types— even the most sensitive. By choosing tallow balm, you’re embracing a time-honored, pure, and effective approach to skincare that promotes a healthy, natural glow.
-
Can I use it on my face?
Yes. And you should. It’s gentle enough for your face, powerful enough for dry elbows, cracked hands, and everything in between.
-
Is it good for sensitive skin?
Tallow is about as close to your skin’s natural oils as you can get. No fragrance (if you choose Unscented), no irritants, no nonsense. Sensitive skin loves it.
-
Will it make me break out?
Nope. It’s non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores. In fact, many customers say it actually helps calm breakouts and balance their skin.
-
What’s the difference between the three balms?
Blue Tansy: Calms irritation and reduces redness. Smells soft and floral.
Blood Orange + Vanilla: Brightens skin with a citrus twist and a warm finish.
Unscented: No scent, no essential oils — just pure, nourishing simplicity. -
Does it smell like beef?
Not even close. Our balms either have a light, natural scent from essential oils or no scent at all. No meat vibes here.
-
Why does it melt or look a little grainy sometimes?
Because it’s natural — no stabilizers, no chemicals. If it melts during shipping, just pop it in the fridge. Texture doesn’t change how it works.
-
How long does one jar last?
Most people get 2–4 months of daily use. A little goes a long way.
-
How should I store it?
Keep it cool and out of direct sunlight. That’s it.
-
Is it safe for kids or during pregnancy?
The Unscented version? Yes. It’s as gentle as it gets. For the scented versions, check with your healthcare provider just to be safe.
-
Can it help with eczema, psoriasis, or really dry skin?
Yep. Many customers use it for skin conditions and see amazing results. It’s not a drug — but it’s full of nutrients that support healing and reduce inflammation.
-
What if I don’t like it?
You get free returns. No hassle. No hard feelings. We also offer free shipping on all orders.

Our grass-fed tallow balm is a deeply nourishing, natural remedy for a variety of skin needs. Rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with essential fatty acids, this balm is perfect for restoring moisture, supporting the skin’s barrier, and promoting a healthy, radiant glow. Its bio-compatible structure makes it especially helpful for those dealing with dry or irritated skin, providing gentle, soothing relief.

-
Why did my tallow balm arrive melted or crumply/grainy?
Our commitment to pure, natural ingredients means each batch of Tallow Balm has unique characteristics. Slight differences in color, texture, and scent are natural, reflecting seasonal variations from our grass-fed tallow source.
Warmer temperatures may soften or melt the balm during shipping; if this happens, let it cool to re-solidify—its nourishing benefits remain fully intact. At times, the balm may feel firmer or grainy; simply warm it by rubbing in your hands before applying.
We believe that the purest, unaltered form of our balm is the most effective, staying true to nature for optimal skin nourishment.
-
Why did you use Jojoba Oil instead of Olive Oil?
Jojoba oil is an excellent addition to grass-fed beef tallow because it closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum, making it more compatible with all skin types than olive oil. Unlike olive oil, jojoba is lightweight and absorbs quickly, which helps balance skin without feeling greasy. It’s also rich in vitamins E and B, along with minerals like zinc and copper, all of which contribute to skin repair and hydration without clogging pores.
By combining grass-fed tallow with jojoba oil, the balm provides a deeply nourishing, easily absorbed blend that supports skin health more effectively than olive oil, giving a smoother, more balanced finish.
-
How should I use the tallow balm?
Tallow balm is incredibly versatile and can be applied anywhere on the body as a moisturizer. Just a small amount goes a long way, thanks to its rich, concentrated formula. Start with a pea size amount and go from there. You can use it on your face, as all of our balms are gentle enough for facial skin. Our Face Balm, specifically, includes essential oils that are particularly beneficial for the delicate skin on your face but can be used on other areas as well.
-
Why doesn’t Hello Selah use whipped tallow balm?
Whipping tallow balm may create a lighter texture, but it also introduces air into the product, which can cause it to oxidize faster, reducing its shelf life and diminishing some of its beneficial properties over time. Additionally, whipping can dilute the balm’s rich, concentrated texture, meaning you’d need more product to get the same level of nourishment.
By keeping our balm unwhipped, we preserve its potency and ensure you’re getting the maximum benefit from each jar. This way, our balm remains as pure and nutrient-rich as possible, ready to deliver deep, long-lasting moisture to your skin.
-
Do you use natural, pure essential oils?
At Hello Selah, we’re committed to using only natural, pure or organic essential oils that has been extracted from its genuine botanical source and does not contain any fillers, additives, or other impurities. Carefully sourced from trusted suppliers around the world, ensuring that each product meets our high standards for quality and purity.
-
Are your tallow balms products safe for kids?
Our products are made with pure, natural ingredients, but if you’re considering them for a child, we suggest consulting with your healthcare provider for peace of mind. For infants, we recommend our unscented tallow balm with jojoba oil, crafted without essential oils to keep it as mild as possible for delicate skin.
-
What is the shelf life of the tallow balm?
Our tallow balm has an expected shelf life of approximately 12 months when stored in a cool, dry place. Grass-fed tallow is naturally stable and contains beneficial fatty acids and vitamins that help it stay fresh over time. While refrigeration isn’t necessary, keeping it in a stable, moderate temperature can help extend its freshness.
-
Does tallow balm have a scent?
Our Pure Tallow Balm has a mild, natural scent from the tallow itself. If we add essential oils, the balm may carry a light, natural fragrance. We never use synthetic fragrances, so any scent is subtle and from pure, natural sources.
-
Can I use tallow balm with makeup?
Absolutely! Our grass-fed tallow balm makes a perfect base for makeup. Apply a thin layer of balm after cleansing and let it absorb for a few minutes before applying your makeup. Tallow balm hydrates and smooths the skin, creating a beautifully prepped base that helps makeup glide on effortlessly and stay fresh throughout the day. Plus, it provides a natural, dewy glow without feeling greasy. You can even dab a tiny bit over makeup for a quick touch-up to keep your skin looking radiant all day.
-
Does tallow balm have a scent?
Our tallow balm has either no scent or a very light, natural scent from the grass-fed tallow itself—making it perfect for those who prefer a subtle, neutral balm. For those who enjoy a hint of fragrance, we also offer versions with essential oils added, bringing an extra layer of natural aroma without any synthetic fragrances. So whether you like it plain or with a touch of botanical scent, there’s a tallow balm to suit your preference!
